Today ends the first half of 2020, leaving us with six months left to accomplish our next set of goals. Considering that time has moved quite swiftly, here lately, passing us by to drop off random losses and sudden shockers that just make the entire body quiver and lips perk up as if you just smelled a dead carcass, you have to ask yourself “what have you accomplished?” Stay right there for a minute
as I change topics briefly…
Home. That one word brings up many images for me; images of warmth, love, chaos, and the building process. The building process is a complex but abstract image. If you consider what building may look like in relation to what goes on inside of the home, you may find the same images I see. So, I Googled home images and found myself looking at beautiful gorgeous “houses” that Google believes represent “homes”. But homes are created and built from the inside out; whereas, houses are built from the outside in, which is why I chose to use the frame of a house to give the image of the building process a physical look. Notice, there’s much missing…
As a kid, we moved around the city enough for me to grasp that with each new frame, in some cases, I got to pick my new bedroom. This was the fun part of the process. Each time I looked forward to imagining where my posters would go to represent my then identity. Decorating always gassed me up on the move but the transition was always tough.
Transition. That one word yields to the unknown. The pill that was always and still is hard for me to swallow is when home doesn’t feel warm anymore but suddenly cold. During these times we are facing as a human race, some would think that home is where everyone would want to be but if being home feels cold and gives your body the chills, who would want to be there? After 22 years of being away from my city, moving back feels surreal and chilly.
However, among the chaos I have felt warmth from the streets encouraging unity, peace, love, and safe protesting. The following pictures are just a few I snapped with my camera phone. For this I say, “I love you Detroit!”
While driving through the city, becoming familiar with the changes I now get to become a part of, I recognize businesses making statements throughout our Downtown community. For this I say, “Thank you Detroit.”
And on just about every social media feed and front lawn I’ve screen shot pictures honoring Black Lives and humanity.
For this I say, “Tomorrow is not promised nor is it here yet. But right now, the world needs more than ever the expression of love, warmth, and security. 2020 is still ticking, let’s stop trying to put her in the grave before her time is up. Leave 2021 in the future where he belongs and for this 3rd quarter make something new happen that promotes life and growth.
Breathe with me in Love, Self-reflection, and Truth …
