UT provides accessible mental health services where people socialize for solutions, self-reflection, and good food-for-thought ideas for a 21st Century ever-changing world.
In support of an optimal quality of life, which includes healthy functioning behaviorally, emotionally, mentally, physically, and spiritually, TUT’s Counseling Services can be employed through teleconference and video sessions in the case where face-to-face appointments are not a convenient format for both the client and counselor.
When receiving counseling services you should know that your privacy is paramount and kept confidential to the best of the counselor’s ability when counseling is not face-to-face through careful choice of words, less focus on incident fact checking, more focus on psychosocial experiences and responses to situations and circumstances, and receiving your approval before transmitting any documents through the web.
There are limitations to teleconference and video distance counseling:
- Lag of response time,
- Time zone differences causing possible scheduling difficulties,
- Cultural and language differences that may affect delivery of services,
- Technology services failure due to uncontrollable functionality of internet, network carriers and limited bandwidth,
- The inability for me to observe behavioral patterns including nonverbal communication or body language to support clients’ developing self-awareness.
You will need to know the three situations where your counselor is obligated to protect you and others that may lead to breaking confidentiality:
- When information has been shared that may harm you and anyone else’s life;
- When information has been shared about any child, children, or elder experiencing any form of abuse;
- And if you are facing legal litigations and the Judge subpoena’s documents concerning your counseling experience.
